BuggerIM v2.0 Iconset

The BuggerIM series of icons was created by Blancmange originally for a half-baked Jabber instant messenger he started working on but abandoned when he saw MirandaIM had done pretty much what he wanted already. To make various XMPP instant messengers more accessible to half-blind users and more appealing in general, 24bpp+Alpha formats were added.

The whimsical icons are readily distinguishable and work quite well on light or dark backgrounds. The "Crystal" variants are provided for users who prefer consistent forms over distinctiveness. (The crystal forms are a result of Blancmange falling in love with caustics after playing R-Type.) Unfortunately, the animated icons are GIFs rather than MNGs or PNG strips. Perhaps Gajim will support the latter formats in future.

At present, Gajim does not conform to  Section 13.16 of the  PNG specification, but the image opacities are contrived to make the images appear acceptable whether naïve or gamma-correct compositing is used. (Luckily, there are hardly any coloured semi-transparent pixels, else objectionable errors in hue would appear in the composited images).

To use the icon sets, unpack BuggerIM-L.zip or BuggerIM-X.zip into wherever Gajim keeps its icon sets. (Try looking in /usr/share/gajim/data/iconsets.) If all goes well, new folders BuggerIM-L and BuggerIM-X will appear as siblings to the other theme folders such as crystal, stellar and gota. You may have to faff about with the file and folder permissions on a Linux system.

The complete BuggerIM 2.0 icon set (sans Montages and Windows Icons) is also attached. With these, you can assemble your own icon sets.

The icons are all created by Daniel Neville (Blancmange) and are released to the public domain.
