Setting up transports

Servers

Get yourself a jabber account offering the transport you want. You may visit (  http://www.jabberes.org/servers/ ) for an overview and to distinguish which server you would prefer.

Some servers offer account creation from within gajim, some don't. The server featured in this tutorial doesn't, so you'll have to create an account by specifying your desired username and a password to use, optionally you may also enter an email adress (in case you lose your password for instance) but you don't need an email adress in order to use lethyro.net for example.

Registration

Lethyro.net doesn't offer account creation from within gajim (yet) so you'll have to visit its  Registration form

And as the site is in german, here's a shot of what you have to specify at least.

Launch gajim, choose to create a new account, choose the server you'd like to use, for example (  http://jabber.ccc.de ) from the dropdown list. Klick next and gajim will connect to your desired server and provide you with a simple mask to create a new account. Enter your desired username and your desired password, hit next and you'll be prompted that your account has been created successfully. Pressing finish will ask for your password you just specified and connect to your jabber server and return a welcome message.

Launch gajim. Upon startup, you'll be asked to enter an account. Choose to use an existing account and enter your login details. If you did everything right you should receive a welcome message.

Transport setup

Now, rightclick your account in your contact list and choose discover services You'll see something similar to this:

ICQ

If you want ICQ, for example, and click Register, now enter your ICQ login details (your unique user ID and your password you use to login to your ICQ account) When done, the server you registered with will use these credentials to login to an ICQ server and import your contact list and your groups.

MSN

Rightclick your account, discover services, mark MSN, hit Register and enter your details. And you're done. Any other offered transport should behave the same, except IRC, which may differ between different servers.

IRC

IRC setup with lethyro.net: You may add a desired IRC channel by choosing the IRC Transport listed under Transports, register, username <your jabber username> and your jabber account password, nick is optional (if you registered with an IRC server you may enter your credentials here) You'll get a info window telling you your account has been successfully created followed by a chat window reading <your username> is not a registered nickname, as shown here:

Now you're ready to add any room you want to visit by Actions --> Join Group Chat --> using account lethyro.net --> Join new Group Chat and make the upcoming form look sth like

#<YOUR_DESIRED_CHANNEL>@<IRC TRANSPORT SERVER TO USE>

A new Chat window will open showing your desired channel

Removing accounts:

So, if you've tried a few servers, creating accounts on each server, you may remove the accounts directly from the server from within gajim. Go to Edit --> Accounts mark the account you wish to remove and click remove. You'll see a prompt asking you whether to remove the account from the local configuration or if you wish to wipe it off the server as well. This will only work for servers offering account creation from within gajim.
