Problems and solutions about roster

  • I have too many contacts in my roster and it's too long to find them when I show offline contacts.

- You should consider using groups to order your roster a little bit. For example, you could create a group named "family". The next hint explains how to do this.

- Focus the Roster and start typing the contacts name.

- Consider using MetaContacts.

  • I don't see how I can create a new group.

Right click on a contact you want to be in this new group, choose "Manage Contact" then "Edit groups", insert the name of the new group and click on "add".

  • How can I change the group of a contact ?

You can Drag and Drop him to the new group if this group already exists. And if you press 'ctrl' during the operation, the contact is copied to another group instead of being moved to it. You can also right click on a contact and select "Manage Contact" then "Edit groups".

  • I have many accounts in gajim, but I generally use only one. Can I disable the other ones so they don't take space in roster ?

You can't do this, but you can use some tricks to make them less visible. Here are some :

- In Edit->Accounts, change the name of the accounts you don't use often. Add a "°" character in front of the name which will cause these accounts to be placed at the end of the list, where they will bother you less. They will also be the first lines to be hidden if your contact list become too long for the roster window.

- In Edit->Preferences, click on modify theme. Use small fonts for account style so accounts line are smaller and take less space.

- You could also merge accounts, so one unique line in roster will be used for all accounts. See next hint.

  • I use multiple accounts, but I don't want to see my contacts divided between my accounts in the roster

Check "Merge accounts" in Edit -> Accounts.

  • I have some contacts that are always invisible, but I know that they are online. Can I set them to be always visible in the roster even when I don't apply the "show offline contacts" setting?

You cannot do that, but you can add these contacts in a group named "_Hiddens" for example, so when you show offline contacts (you can use Ctrl+o), you will still see them at beginning of the list so you won't have to search through a long list.

  • I have multiples items in roster which represent the same contact, can I group them ?

Yes, you can do that if you have gajim 0.10 or newer. This is called Meta-Contacts. See MetaContacts for full help.
