Register to Jabber
Your are new to the Jabber world and you want to get an account on a Jabber server ? It's easy ! This page will help you registering to Jabber with Gajim.
You first have to choose a Jabber server that offers you the services you need. In fact, there are many servers that offer differents transports (ICQ, MSN, AIM, Yahoo, ...). You can find a list of public servers on this page.
Let's say you have choosen amessage.de. You now have to choose a pseudo. Let's say you want "pseudo" as your pseudo. Now you have your Jabber ID : pseudo@…
Now let's create this account with Gajim. Once Gajim is launched :
- Choose Accounts in the Edit menu.
- Click on the Add button.
- Select "I want to register for a new account".
- Choose your server or type it in the entry.
- Enter your pseudo and choose a password for your account.
- Click on the Finish button.
- Now you are online !
- Once online, you can modify your account again and set your details in the Account tab, you can tune your preferences in the General tab. If you use a proxy, configure it in the Connection tab, and finally, if you want to use OpenPGP, choose your key in the Personal Information tab.
Resources
Another advantage of the Jabber protocol is that you can be connected more than once with a single account, with different resources and priorities. For example, you can be connected at home with resource "at home" and priority 5, and when you are at work you can be connected with resource "at work" and priority 7 to get your messages at work, without being disconnected at home.
- You can choose a resource and a priority in the account tab (the default ones are correct if you don't know what to write here).
- Finally you can now add contacts by choosing add in the Menu menu.
