Did You Know that…
Here you can find hints on using Gajim, hidden preferences and so on.
- Gajim supports printing time in many ways ?
In fact, you can choose between printing time in everyline, printing every 5 minutes, and not printing Time To change how time is printed go Edit → Preferences look in Chat tab.
- Gajim supports many profiles ?
You launch Gajim with gajim -p something and you use the something profile
- You can set Ctrl+Enter to send a message and Enter to insert a newline ?
You can do this by setting send_on_ctrl_enter to True in advanced configuration editor.
- You can look up a word or phrase in Wikipedia, in a web dictionary or in a web search engine ?
Highlight a word or phrase from text that is already sent and right click and select one of the menuitems in 'Actions for your_word/phrase_here'.
- You can browse through your already sent messages in a chat window ?
When chatting press Ctrl+Up or Ctrl+Down. You can even set the maxs lines that Gajim will remember by editing key_up_lines in advanced configuration editor!
- You can have big, msn-like avatars ?
In advanced configuration editor change the avatar_height and avatar_width, about 100 pixels should do for MSN buddy icons.
- If you set beep for a sound event you will have the system speaker beep ?
- You can customize the way tabs look ?
In advanced configuration editor look for 'tabs'.
- You can make the chat window remember everything instead of just a few lines ?
In advanced configuration editor set restore_lines to -1 to restore all lines, or to however many lines you want to be restored
- You can open a chat with a contact with a simple middle click on his name ?
- Gajim can look like IRC client in groupchat
Open ACE. Set after_nickname to ">", before_nickname to "<", gc_refer_to_nick_char to ":".
- You can use some commands by typing in group chat ?

- If both you and your contact use Gajim, you can bold, underline or italic words in a chat ?
You can use the following codes: *bold*, _underlined_ and /italic/ . For example: *Gajim* is a _cool_ /Jabber client/.
