Description

It would be nice if the roster and chat windows could be translucent/transparent with different degrees of opacity. Pidgin has this functionality but only in their Windows app.

Shouldn't the windowmanager control that?

beryl does that

Changed 17 months ago by Liorithiel

Not exactly, beryl doesn't know which part of window is roster, and which not. Gnome-terminal is able to have translucent background, but also displays characters with no opacity. Gajim could do the same -- make transparent background, but not the foreground text.

does GTK allow that ?

Replying to asterix:

does GTK allow that ?

Pidgin and gnome-terminal are both GTK. So logicaly, it does, I think.

Replying to asterix: Pidgin uses a gtk plugin but themes don't confer transparency. Only the Windows version of Pidgin has a transparency plugin.

From their forum:

--- Can I make Pidgin transparent/translucent?

It is not possible to make Pidgin translucent in Linux and other platforms that use X11.

The X.org X11R6 server provides a COMPOSITE extension that allows applications to have true translucency, but it is X.org-specific and it requires support at the GTK+ level (if it is to be per-widget). We do not wish to support this form of translucency until it is supported by GTK+. We also do not wish to implement the pseudo-translucency offered by other programs (by copying a section of your background image, tinting it, and plastering it onto a Pidgin window).

Same issue for Gajim I guess?

yep exactly. When GTK will support that (IMHO that will be hard cause it has to support it on all platforms ...) we'll propose that.
