blinking notification area icon on event

Description

I think it would be a good idea to have a blinking notification area icon. The change of the icon is not always sufficient as you not always notice the moment of changing the icon. I think that if the icon would blink one could notice it in the corner of your eyesight without the need to look from time to time on the state of the notification icon.

just use a theme that has an animated gif for message icon (sun theme for

exemple).

PS: impossible under win that (for the moment) only supports ico files there

I am shopping around for free jabber IM clients (for my workplace) and I

really liked this one until I found out there is no way to make a message window start minimized in the taskbar & blink like almost ALL other major clients do. (AIM, Trillian, MSN, GAIM, etc) Until you guys can fix that you aren't going to get a large amount of people using this thing 'cause otherwise people just won't see that they have messages.

i don't know, but the tray msg icon is enough for me, and it works

people see they have messages in systary with an animated image (at least

under lin), and also with auto popup of message window. What do you want more ?

Changed 2 years ago by pmfriel (at) hotmail.com

You guys can do what you want I'm just telling you that you need to make

it an option if you want more people to use this client. The default behavior in almost all IM clients is to open a minimized window in the taskbar that blinks until you click on it. I don't want to have to look at the system tray to check and see if I have a new message and I don't want a big window to pop up every time I get a new message. Then I am having to open & minimize the application all the time just to talk to people. The more options you have the more people are going to use your app.

Replying to pmfriel (at) hotmail.com:

And I don't want any application to open windows on it's own. Especially while making use of 8 desktops and having no control over where it appears.

Which is exactly the reason they should make it an OPTION. Giving people

the OPTION of how they want the application to behave is the secret to success. If you just code it one way (the way you happen to think is right) then a certain group of people may like it but you completely shut out the other group. Why not just include the option so that everyone can use it and decide how they want it to behave?

Changed 2 years ago by patrys@…

Giving people the option in this case is against building intuitive

software. I know of none Linux Jabber clients that behave the way you described and adding an additional preferences entry for that would only bloat the application. Not to add that unused code flow paths (as I suppose that noone would bother to test each and every configuration scheme) are a sure way to get more bugs.

indeed I also think that having too many options hide them all. systray,

notification, autopopup, show in roster seems enough options. You'll be ablt to configure them as you want with #1005

I guess all the users of Gaim, Trillian, AIM, MSN and Yahoo and every

other major IM client are setting the wrong default behavior and you guys are right. Good luck getting a large user base with this attitude.
