Hotkey "popup last unread message"

Description

Gajim's mode "only show incoming messages in roster" is very useful from the point of view "I'd like to read all IM messages when I want to, not when my buddies want it". However, it's hard to find "what's new" when your roster is big.

I would propose some keyboard shortcut which pops up single unread message, behaving exactly as I do by scrolling roster, searching for the contacts with unread messages and clicking on them.

you have systray for that, enable it, and just click on it when you want

to read incomming messages

No, I won't use mouse for such operation: this is unusable, because it is

slow (move hand to the mouse, move mouse to the 16x16 (ok, 32x32) square, click, move hand back to the keyboard). I perform all the other operations in gajim by using keyboard and gajim's interface is well designed enough for keyboard manipulation.

Also, there are plenty of WMs which do not have systray. Mine also, and this is by intention.

How about using gajim-remote show_next_unread as explained here:

GajimDBus? Maybe your WM support custom shortcuts, similar to metacity.

Global shortcuts need to have holding menu item, otherwise they are not

visible to users.

Thanks, I wasn't aware of this command of gajim-remote, and surely my WM

support shortcuts (actually it's fully programmable from the shell).

However, there is another issue which prevents me from using gajim-remote: #2180 (gajim-remote is slow).

This is the right way to do it (I used it and it's fine). See #2180 for

the other problem.
