GTalk style poor mans smilies.

Description

In GTalk a "word" consisting of two or three characters and beginning with a colon (:) is highlighted, thus making it easier to visually interpret smilies even when no smiley theme is chosen.

It's a nice feature and improves greatly on the human interaction with the interface.

so the next is :bold?

that is what you mean? try *bold*

I mean that when a string of 2-3 characters beginning with : or ; is received, it's interpreted as a smiley and shown as bold - not sent as bold. :)

I haven't used Gtalk. I have used Gmail UI to chat sometimes. is it the same?

you mean that if I send you :no you'll see "no" in bold? I don't see the interest in that.

Here is an example:

(I don't know what the text actually says as it's just a random screenshot in a language that I don't understand, but the smilies are visible in it. :P)

as you can see, the :-p smilie isn't displayed bold, but ;) is, which doesn't start with a : so i think they just look for :) :( ;) and so on and don't make everything after a : bold.

i can only speak for me, but i don't like it. i have disabled emoticons and ascii formatting aswell, so all the text just looks like normal text. there are emoticons and this would just be another type of emoticon. only difference is, that you don't replace ;) with an image but look for those smilies and make them bold.

I propose WONTFIX. if you want smileys, it's nicer with images.
