Display only one icon per contact in the roster and use the avatar if available

Currently Gajim displays the avatar for a contact off to the right, possibly clobbering the contact's status text. Instead, I think that the contact's avatar (if set) should replace their status icon.

The roster would then look more like the one in Pandion. Status information can be denoted by displaying the avatar in greyscale if the user is away.

It's ugly. I prefer current Gajim roster, and it's more usable for me.

it's not that ugly but it's not for .10 AFAIAC. of course we can have an option to have this view or the current view when we have it in trunk.

most users love avatars. moreover we alreayd have an option to not show avatars in roster

But even if I disable avatars (in 0.9.1), I still lose the space there, which is really annoying. I get truncated test followed by an empty space where the remaining characters could have been printed.

Remove background color for contact in theme preferences. I think that I saw a ticket for it, this shuold be by default removed in svn? #1465

I like the current design with avatars on the right. It is identical to

how Google Talk handles the roster and it is more consistant if not all contacts have an avatar.
